“…nothing is so much wanted and desired at sea, as the discovery of the longitude, for the safety and quickness of voyages, the preservation of ships, and the lives of men…” - The Longitude Act

Lignum Vitae owes its inspiration to the discovery of 17th Century Clockmaker John Harrison who used Lignum Vitae in the intricate workings of sea clocks (marine chronometers), as the wood is exceptionally hard and resistant to corrosion in sea air.

Inspired by Harrison’s innovative use of materials we blend unexpected notes to produce a multifaceted and intriguing fragrance. Hot, metallic aspects are emphasised alluding to Lignum Vitae’s nickname of ‘Iron Wood’; the characteristic citrus, peppery scent of the Lignum Vitae itself and heavy emphasis was
placed on the salt air which caused brass marine chronometers to seize.

Lignum Vitae also forms part of BeauFort London’s product development. Working with architectural designer Robert Steer and Company (whose workshop in a boatyard on the River Thames became a regular haunt at the brand’s genesis) the prototypes of the distinctive wooden caps were hand cut from
this exotic hardwood. It was found that when sawn the exceptionally dense wood released an evocative ‘cakey’ aroma. This unusual ‘workshop’ smell and the Proustian suggestion of Madelaines and childhood memories was duly emphasised in the fragrances construction.

The perfume was designed both as a symbolic representation of the intricate workings of Harrison’s time machines, but also as a suggestion of the power of scent to transport us though time. Perfumer Julie Marlowe was tasked with combining these enigmatic aspects in an unexpected and intriguing way.

Top Notes: Black Pepper, Red Berries, Madeleine, Cake Accord, Marine Note, Mandarin, Winter Lemon, Bergamot, Juniper, Ginger, Lime, Franincense and Caramel Note.

Middle Notes: Lignum Vitae Wood Accord, Guaiacwood, Vetiver and Peppery Agar.

Base Notes: Sand Accord, Sea Salt Accord, Amber, Frankicense Resin, Moss, Musk and Vanilla.

Interesting
Format: Kindle
The book was good. I was inspired by my student who did a project on this book. I was very impressed with her project that I had to read more about The Salem Witch Trails. I’m impressed to say the less and this book for anyone who like books based on true events and it definitely kept me interested because I finish this book within a day. I recommend this book to anyone.

Correct research and good writing
Format: Kindle
I Escaped the Salem Witch Trials is a gripping recreation of what happened in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. It is told from the point of view of one girl who wasn’t swept up in the hysteria that gripped so many of her companions. The characters are believable and skillfully drawn and the reader understands the fear that must have clutched the inhabitants of the small town of Salem. The narrative loses a little steam when it comes to the escape from the Boston gaol, but that doesn’t detract from the historically accurate depiction of these infamous trials. The details have been well researched, and the book’s production values are excellent. I would recommend this to any school children who want to gain some insight into how the witch trials came about, or any parents who want to learn a little about the dark side of our puritan ancestors.

Loved it!! It makes history come alive!!
Format: Paperback
I bought this book for my niece who has enjoyed all of the I Escaped books. I read it too and I can say that this one really makes history come alive! The Salem witch hunt is a disturbing and scary topic but I like how the author makes it relevant to today. The main character Hannah has to stand up to the bullies in a sort of mean girl clique and she is a really strong female protagonist! There’s a lot of interesting facts about the Puritans and about the people involved in the Witch trials too. I highly recommend! Loved it!!

Perfect summer read for children and adults.
Format: Paperback
My daughter recommended this book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and it made me feel grateful that I was not born during this era in history. I felt apprehension, anger and sadness, for the characters in the book, who were wrongfully accused and punished for something they weren't guilty of: consorting with the Devil.
