Broadcasting legend Colonel Bob Sheridan did it all. Minor league baseball player, pro rodeo rider, cattle farmer, banker, military man and politician. He also become one of the greatest boxing commentators to have ever lived. This is his story.

Inducted into seven boxing halls of fame in a career spanning six decades, the Colonel called the action for just about every Don King promoted fight-card in history, including the ‘Thrilla in Manilla’ and finally Tyson vs. Holyfield’. However, it was his work on two nights in particular – separated by over twenty years – that would in the end define his body of work.

His iconic 1974 call of the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, the showdown between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. And the 1997 rematch between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, when the Colonel defied all medical advice by turning up at ringside – with his cardiologist in toe – just hours after suffering a life-threatening heart attack.

The Colonel undoubtedly set the temperature of every room he entered. Though it was his irrepressible sense of humour and fun that made him so beloved by sports fans around the world. That, and a voice which truly comes around only once in a generation.

About the author

Marc Caputo hadn’t thought about putting his Sports Journalism degree to use in over ten years. One conversation with the Colonel Bob Sheridan, however, changed all that in an instant. Bombarded by the sheer force of the man’s personality even at the ripe age of 78, and a gift for flattery that would rival any government diplomat on the planet, Marc soon realised that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity could not be missed. So he fastened his seatbelt, taking in a deep breath, knowing that he was about to embark on one hell of a ride.

Super fun!
Size: 8.5, Color: Red Pepper
These are so fantastic! The color is amazing! It is a bit on the tomato-red side of the color-wheel. The fit is great. They are comfortable from the 1st step. Easy to walk in.

Nice so far.
Size: 6.5, Color: Molasses
Comfy. They were tight the first day across the toes but as I've worn them a couple times they are loosening up. The sole is forming to my foot. These are very much like Doc Martin's from the early 2000s. Not sure about quality since I haven't had them for very long.
